Words with Wine after the event: Vu Do with Carina Hoang

South Perth Library is happy to have hosted Vu’s first ever public appearance since the release of his book, ‘Vu’s A Taste for Life.’ This session was highly interactive, with Vu happy to take questions from the audience and thank the public who have been visiting his restaurants for so long, as without their patronage he wouldn’t be the successful business owner he is today.

I was especially looking forward to this event because it has three of my favourite elements – 1. A recipe book; 2. Food tasting; and 3. An interesting real life story. Upon entering the room there were platters piled with spring rolls and peppery rice paper wrapped seafood and noodles, which were delicious.

Following the food tasting, Carina and Vu sat down for an informal talk about Vu’s life and influences and how he worked his way up in the hospitality industry to become an award winning chef. After fleeing Vietnam at just 7 years of age, Vu learned traditional methods of Vietnamese cooking from his father and from the various places he worked. Vu started out as a dishwasher, gradually working his way up to become a chef and despite his success has remained humble, which was very inspiring.

*The library has another event involving food in June!! Ex My Kitchen Rules semi-finalists Daniela and Stefania will be doing a pasta making demonstration and tasting. Call 9474 0800 or visit bit.ly/11Ptz6v to book your spot and the chance to win a copy of their new cook book, ‘Saporito!’.
